It started when he was younger, about 20 I think (Hes 40 in the manga).
Ya see, Doryu is a Sentenoid, a non-human creature with human level intelect. There is a thick line of prejudice between humans and Senteniods. But Doryu began to like humans, so, he worked for 10 (I think) long years to make money, and with it he built a small city where Sentenoids and humans could live together in peace. One day, though, the peace was disturbed when a young Sentenoid accidently hurt a young human boy. The boy`s mother became outraged and Doryu came to the scene. Both the humans and sentenoids living in the town began to yell and riot at each other and a fight broke out.
The sentenoids eventually left, except Doryu. The people of the town elected a new mayor and tried to force Doryu out. He wouldn`t leave the town he built. So the townspeople would beat him up and things to try to get him out. But he still wouldn`t listen to them So they locked him in the darkest prison with absoulutley no light or food or water. After 100 days with no light water or food, Doryu collapsed, seeing a Sinclaire piece in the brink of the darkness. It helped him break out of the prison and he killed all the people in the town....

Okay, okay, maybe his past wasn`t AS bad as Gaara`s. >
